Her breeder voluntarily dropped his state license so the Bureau of Dog Law stopped inspecting his kennel. If they had continued to inspect him, they may have noticed her small, emaciated frame concealed in a filthy wooden crate only feet from a manure trough. This Italian Greyhound was slowly being starved to death. Rescued by Bob Baker of the ASPCA, she was handed off to MLAR three hours later. Shortly after that, she was rushed to the emergency room where she delivered seven puppies over the course of eight long and painful hours. Too dehydrated to produce milk to nurse her young, the nurses of Metropolitan Veterinary Associates had to tube feed her babies. And on the same afternoon that marked the death of yet another one of her puppies (three died in all), a humane officer charged the breeder with animal cruelty. The four remaining puppies would eventually graduate to being bottle fed and their mother would slowly regain her strength. The cost to MLAR for "Mona Lisa" and her puppies' medical treatment (even with our considerable discounts) was over $9000. We're hoping private donations will help us cover their veterinary expenses. Happily, the mom and all of the puppies are thriving in their new homes, although for the mom transitioning to a home has been difficult and she has finally found her forever home in the arms of one of our loving volunteers who has adopted two other puppy mill survivor dogs.
